Named for the family who owned the land on which the bridge was built, it was the first automobile bridge built to cross the Sacramento River in Northern California. Built in 1915 it is designated a California Historical Landmark. After the bridge was built sons, John and Charles Diestelhorst established a resort on the northeast bank of the river adjacent to the bridge. It became a popular place to go in the summer. The "Swimming hole" was located next to the bridge and resort from 1915 until Shasta Dam was built. The water became too cold to swim in after the dam was built. There were many events that took place at the swimming hole. The bridge is now connected to the river trail and is used for bicycles and pedestrians only. To learn more about the bridge, read Dottie Smith's books on history in Shasta County.
